NewsTECHFutures Retreat to Gather Leading Engineers to Focus on Live IP Production, AI, AR, News Personalization

TVNewsCheck and Sports Video Group will present NewsTECHFutures Retreat, a gathering designed to bring engineering leaders together to talk about emerging news technology issues.

Set for Thursday, May 31 at Atlanta’s OMNI CNN Center hotel, the retreat will offer a unique opportunity — in a relaxed, intimate setting — for leading TV engineers to explore issues such as producing live news over IP; risk management during an IP transition; implementing AI for weather and news; planning and budgeting for AR; optimizing AR for weather and news and personalizing the news on platforms like OTT and ATSC 3.

“The U.S. television news industry has begun to grapple with the challenges of the IP transition and with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence,” said Harry A. Jessell, TVNewsCheck co-founder and editor.  “The NewsTECHFutures retreat will gather engineers who are already implementing or working with these technologies in the newsroom to talk about their experiences. It’s going to be a terrific opportunity for engineering managers from networks and station groups to exchange information and to begin to chart their course forward.”

NewsTECHFutures Retreat will kick off with a Technology Tour of CNN led by Turner’s Bob Hesskamp, Head of Engineering; Michael Koetter, SVP Digital Media Systems and Matthew Holcombe, SVP Production Broadcast Engineering. After guiding NewsTECHFutures attendees through a tour of the technologies they find most interesting, the three leading Turner engineering executives will engage in a conversation and Q&A with attendees about what they are learning as they transition Turner’s Atlanta campus to IP and build an all-IP news facility for CNN in New York.

“The Technology Tour of CNN will be held off-the-record, so participants feel comfortable sharing information about the early stages of the IP transition’s move into live TV production,” said Kathy Haley, co-founder and publisher of TVNewsCheck. “We are extremely pleased to be able to offer this important event as part of the retreat.”
