Frank Mungeam

ASU Cronkite School of Journalism, Knight Professor of TV News Innovation

Frank Mungeam is the knight professor of practice in TV news innovation at the award-winning Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Mungeam joined ASU in November 2018 through a grant from the Knight Foundation to innovate new and sustainable journalism formats for local news on broadcast and digital. In a survey of peers by U.S. News and World Reports, ASU has been named "Most Innovative School" nationwide for three straight years.

Previously, Mungeam was VP of digital audience engagement for TEGNA, a local broadcaster operating 47 local television stations and news websites across the country. Mungeam led digital innovation, strategic partnerships, and best practices to engage audiences using digital and social technology. From 2014 through 2017, he was TEGNA’s VP of digital content, leading the company’s digital and social strategy. He joined the corporate team in July, 2014 as director of digital content for Gannett Broadcasting.

Prior to joining TEGNA Media, Mungeam was director of digital media for KGW-TV and was the new media director at KATU-TV, both in Portland, Oregon. Mungeam began his media career in broadcasting as a TV producer in Seattle and then as an executive producer in Portland.

Mungeam graduated with honors from Harvard College with a degree in psychology. He also has a master's degree in communication and leadership studies from Gonzaga University. Mungeam has taught courses on digital and social media as an adjunct professor in the Creative Media and Digital Culture Program at Washington State University. He has also authored two books, one published by Simon and Schuster.

Mungeam has one son and they share a love of the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and snowboarding. He is a professional ski instructor and on most winter weekends can be found making tracks cross country skiing.
